Students returned from Winter Break to a beautiful spring! The orchard began to bloom, classes and projects resumed, and lots of exciting field trips took place. Students in the Field Studies class visited the local chapter of the Sierra Club, where they met with Dan Millis and learned about the organization and its local conservation efforts. The school was also treated to a free performance of The Fantasticks! by our own Glen Coffman’s theater group Winding Road Theater.
Many more events happened during our all-school Councils, such as saying a sad farewell to Cosima, our first exchange student, learning about the issues with educational funding from David Lujan of the Arizona Center for Economic Progress, and hearing about the college enrollment process at Pima from Ryan Sermon. The school was also treated to an interactive improv theater performance with an eye towards promoting social justice, presented by members of the French Dept. at the UofA.
In between classes, field trips, and presentations, students enjoyed the company of our new feathered residents in the chicken coop during lunch times and breaks. As the weather warmed up, the cactus garden burst into bloom, and students spent time outside engaging in many activities (such as disc golf on our course at Sears Park). Those that wished a retreat from the heat spent time working on various activities inside, such as the pop art projects in Graphic Arts, or even the new Judo classes!
The end of the semester saw the conclusion of many classes and projects, such as the Physics class touring the Pima Air and Space Museum, the Earth Science class holding their annual Rosemont Mine debate, the Design/Build class presenting their architectural drawings to potential clients, and, to top it all off, the 12th grade class took a weekend-long senior trip to Lake Havasu!
