This semester, Sky Islands is piloting a new Introduction to Engineering course. To kick it off, the students were introduced to the design process and challenged to build the tallest, free-standing tower with a marshmallow on top using only 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 meter of tape, and 1 meter of string. Through this challenge, they had to identify the problem, including the criteria for success and constraints, brainstorm possible ideas, design their tower, build, test and evaluate their tower, then redesign and rebuild. After going through two cycles of the design process, students reflected on what they did successfully and places they wanted to improve on for their next challenge.
