While we may not be able to attend in-person classes, Sky Islands is continuing to try and build community (and get students outside!) by bringing small groups of students together to enjoy the naturally socially-distant sport of cycling. Students in Bike Club meet every other week on Zoom to discuss all things bike riding, and also meet in-person to take rides together or to learn and practice cycling skills. Riders range from beginner, first-time bike riders to those who have been cycling for years. For our first ride, Bike Club members rode through the neighborhood and learned the value of a HAWK crossing in order to safely cross busy streets. Our first skills day focused primarily on learning one of the most important do-it-yourself jobs- how to patch and repair a flat tire.
Students in Bike Club are becoming enthusiastic riders, and the club promises to be a positive program to help build and maintain good health, confidence, and community.
