Students in the Design/Build and Animal Studies classes have been hard at work constructing our new chicken coop! The selected site, which used to be an old playground, had to be cleared out and prepared first. Then the construction began! The coop will make use of a shade ramada to attach ceiling supports, and the walls are constructed out of rammed earth. Students and their families also participated in an all-day Saturday work day.
After construction was completed, the big day finally arrived! The Animal Studies class went to OK Feed and Supply, where they picked up over 25 chicks from five different varieties. The new arrivals were brought in to the school, where they received a grand welcome.
As the semester advanced, the chicks grew fast, and have adjusted quite well to their new home, which is always under the watchful eye of our resident hawks, prompting the need for students to take on the role of shepherds!
