G.A.L.S. Trip

This year, Sky Islands was honored to be selected to participate in the GALS (Girls on outdoor Adventures for Leadership and Science) program, which is designed to encourage more girls to go into STEM-related fields and to build their confidence, hosted by Dr. Elise Gornish of the School of Natural Resources and the Environment at the UofA. Six of our sophomore and junior girls went on a week-long camping and backpacking trip to the Chiricahua Mountains, where they met daily with women scientists representing a diversity of fields and learned about their areas of research, constructed and conducted their own scientific studies on the trip, and had a ton of fun! Upon their return, the students worked with their trip leaders/ mentors at the UofA to create bold presentations of their findings, which they presented both at the university as well as at the school.
