Physics Class Cistern Installation

Students in the Applied Physics class put their year’s worth of study to the test when they installed our first water harvesting cistern with the help of our new Architecture and Design/ Build class teacher Ray Clamons. Using what they had learned in the classroom, the students first installed a series of gutters along the roof near the heritage orchard area, calculating the slope precisely to make sure to channel all the rainfall to the cistern site. Then, alongside Ray, the students connected the gutters to the new cistern, which holds a whopping 2800 gallon capacity! The new cistern will be used to irrigate the orchard without the need for city water, part of Sky Islands’ larger focus of sustainable living and design.
