Topics in US History Class Trip to Casa Grande Ruins

Students in the Topics in US History class have been learning about Pre-columbian civilizations in North America, with a special emphasis on the indigenous civilizations of the Southwestern US and Arizona, including the Huhugam (Hohokam). Their studies culminated with a trip to Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, where they saw a stunning example of master engineering, astronomical sophistication, and an incredible cultural center over a thousand years old and just an hour and a half from school! Seeing the amazing city center firsthand really brought the lessons in the classroom to life to the students, and made them realize just how old the human history of our region really is, and just how advanced the indigenous people of this region were prior to European contact.
