Plant Biology Class Trip to San Xavier Co-op Farm

Students in Plant Biology class have been learning about the ethnobotanical use of native Sonoran Desert plants, and about how the cultivation and consumption of traditional foods can help play a role in solving the massive diabetes epidemic striking the Tohono O’Odham Nation. Students have also been learning about organic farming practices in general as well, so it was time for the annual trip to San Xavier Co-op Farm for a tour from Sky Islands’ dear friend Bob Sotomayor and local expert in traditional foods Phyllis Valenzuela, where the students’ lessons in the classroom came to life.
