Language Arts 9 Gardening Project

Students in the LA 9/ Strategic Reading class have been reading about soil ecology and the biology of a garden in preparation for the construction of the school’s Kitchen Garden, which is the class project. However, before the students started on the creation of the garden, they had to test our soil structure, texture, and overall health.  Then, they compiled all of their results into a soil report. Next, they prepared the soil by double digging-a technique that requires digging down two feet before adding any compost and soil amendments.  Double digging aerates the soil and allows easier root penetration once seeds are planted. Once that was completed, the students backfilled the trench with compost, then installed the irrigation system. Following a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the first row of the Kitchen Garden was planted!
