Gardening by Design Class Trip to Underwood Landscape Lab

Seeking inspiration in their upcoming designs for the school courtyard, the students in Gardening by Design saw the Underwood Family Sonoran Landscape Laboratory at the University of Arizona. This beautiful courtyard was created out of a 2.1 acre parking lot that was completely transformed into a lush oasis that harvests water from roof runoof, AC condensate, and wastewater to create lush wetlands, riparian areas, and mesquite bosques. It also reduces the urban heat island effect, and houses endangered species of fish and leopard frogs. The students were challenged to analyze the site, and then decide how to integrate ideas and components from the design into our courtyard.
