Sky Islands High, with environmental focus, will take over now-vacant Rogers’ campus

                                  Tucson Unified will allow charter school to lease closed site

The midtown campus, 6000 E. 14th St., will be home to Sky Islands Public Charter High School come August.  Sky Islands, which is in its fifth year of operation, has an environmental studies focus that is integrated into core subjects.

If you are unfamiliar with how the process works in Arizona, it is actually fairly straightforward.

The taxpayer writes a check to the school before December 31, 2012.  When tax time rolls around, taxpayers then claim the direct tax credit on their Arizona income tax form.

The amount donated (up to $200 for single taxpayers and $400 for jointly filing married taxpayers) is then directly subtracted from the total taxes owed to the state of Arizona for that year.  For example, if your tax bill to the State of Arizona is $650, and you donated $200 to Sky Islands High School before December 31, 2012, the amount you will owe the State of Arizona when you file taxes is $450 – your $650 obligation minus the $200 you have already paid through the direct tax credit program.

The bottom line is that with the Arizona Tax Credit Program, you help us at Sky Islands, and…

it costs you nothing!

Stop in to Barnes and Noble on Broadway Nov. 17 for a fun-filled day of activities and to learn about Sky Islands’ community projects— a city-wide proposal to combat non-biodegradable plastic waste and our trip to CEDO, the marine research center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans at Rocky Point, Sonora in July.

Sky Islands’ students will test your math IQ with games and puzzles, and perform live music.  For younger children, activities in the children’s area will include sing-a-longs and storytelling, coloring and drawing.

A portion of proceeds from sales will go to supporting our environmental and academic programs. So come visit Barnes and Noble, 5130 E. All you have to do is send in your old and/ or broken electronics (including cell phones, computers, mp3 players, etc.), DVDs, or empty ink and toner cartridges with your student between now and November 15th. Then it gets picked up and either refurbished and re-sold or responsibly recycled, and the school makes money towards our Desert/ Sea Trip! Not only that, but this program encourages the reuse or recycling of products that would otherwise contribute to e-waste, which is very much in line with the philosophy of the school.
